This month food banks and volunteers across the country came together to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a national day of service with various initiatives to fight hunger and make a positive impact in their respective communities. As Dr. King proclaimed in his Nobel Peace Prize speech, “I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.” Additionally, the Trump administration made waves again when it was announced that 14 states would sue the administration over the new food stamp rule.

On Thursday afternoon, January 16th, 14 states filed a lawsuit to block a new rule that would eliminate food stamps for an estimated 688,000 Americans. The Legal Council For Health Justice shared an article where it argues that “USDA unlawfully limited states' discretion to exempt certain adults from work requirements for an extended period of time based on local employment conditions.” District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine and State Attorney General Tish James are leading the lawsuit.
